The "Created Equal" Film Series is part of the National Endowment for the Humanities Bridging Cultures Initiative. The Initiative is designed to encourage communities to consider the long struggle for civil rights in the U.S. and to reflect on the ideals of freedom and equality that have helped bridge deep racial and cultural divides in American society.


Film Discussion: An Ordinary Hero

"An Ordinary Hero" is an award-winning documentary film about Joan's career as a fighter for human rights. It will be shown at 7:00 PM on March 26 in the Key Auditorium on the Siena College campus. Joan Mulholland will be present to discuss the film and answer questions from the audience. Appearing with Joan will be Michael O'Brien, author of We Shall Not Be Moved: The Jackson Woolworth's Sit-in and the Movement It Inspired.

Child Soldier

Original play written by Thalia Cunningham & Mahmood Karimi Hakak, and directed by Mahmood Karimi Hakak. A former female child soldier from the war in Liberia, West Africa, enters a typical inner city American public high school with its bullying, mean girls, drug and gangs culture. She exhibits all the shyness, awkwardness, and self-consciousness anticipated in any teenaged young woman in a new high school - except she's also a former cannibal, murderer, and sex slave, all of which she tries to hide while learning to navigate the battlefields of her new life.
