Inspired by the life and work of Francis of Assisi, Siena’s education program prepares teachers to create a good and just society. Our program leads to certification in secondary (7-12) education.
Once accepted into our Teacher Preparation Program, you will be required to meet all course requirements for your chosen major. At the same time, you will work toward your teaching certificate by completing our Teacher Preparation Program requirements. When you graduate, you will be equipped to provide quality learning environments for secondary students with diverse backgrounds and abilities.
Siena’s education program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and is registered with the New York State Department of Education. Our programs lead to New York State Initial Teacher Certification in Adolescent Education (grades 7-12) in Biology, Chemistry, English Language Arts, French, Mathematics, Physics, Social Studies, and Spanish. We also offer a program leading to Initial Teacher Certification in Business and Marketing (all grades).
Siena also offers elective courses for noncertification students whose career goals are related to education. These courses are a good foundation for graduate work in elementary education, school psychology, guidance and counseling, school social work, literacy, and special education.
Thanks to an agreement between Siena College and Sage Graduate School, Siena graduates who have complete our secondary certification program gain automatic acceptance to a Masters Degree program in Elementary Education, Health Education, Guidance and Counseling, Literacy, Special Education, and Literacy/Special Education. Siena students who do not enter our secondary certification program can still receive automatic acceptance in the programs listed by completing an acceptable series of courses at Siena with a recommendation from a Siena Education department faculty member.
